JONATHAN GORTON aka "Cheesecake"
Jonathan grew up in San Rafael where, at 13, he began working with kids refereeing and coaching soccer. While working towards a degree in philosophy at San Francisco State University, Jonathan joined the service industry. You may have met him during his time working the reception desk at The Cheesecake Factory in Corte Madera. Jonathan came on board with AndrewsCamps in June 2012. He quickly became a favorite with all the kids because of his enthusiasm and special talent for relating to each one. Jonathan’s favorite aspect of AndrewsCamps is the long-lasting relationships that are formed over by spending year after year with our campers, a family away from home.
Olivia grew up in Marin and was born to be a teacher and to mentor kids. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies at Sonoma State and holds a preliminary teaching credential. As the first employee ever, Olivia has played just about every role there is at AndrewsCamps since 2012--art director, counselor, birthday coordinator, assistant turtle feeder, accountant, and more. But staff admire and rely on Olivia most for her whirlwind multi-tasking skills as the AndrewsCamps Office Administrator. If you ever want to show your appreciation, Olivia is a big fan of all kinds of pickles and vinegar.
James grew up in Marin and joined AndrewsCamps after six years as a founding director of children’s center Huellas de Paz in Managua, Nicaragua. He has worked with children and youth for over ten years as a teacher, mentor and advocate. James loves dancing, playing music and hiking the local trails. He cares deeply about making each child know they are respected and loved and enjoys being both silly and serious. He aims to give children as much freedom as possible while maintaining a safe and organized environment where they can make friends, learn about themselves and others, and just have fun!
Mimi (Andrew’s mom) grew up as the oldest of 8 children and has been around kids her entire life. Mimi’s passion has always been to cherish the spontaneity of the kids, to guide the development of their little characters and to demonstrate that no matter what, she loves them a lot and will be there for them anytime. Without questions she loves Andrew’s one rule: “whatever you say and do should make the other person feel good.” Mimi hopes that in years to come the children will look back fondly at AndrewsCamps and come back as teenagers to teach love to a new generation of kids. Mimi’s sewing and knitting classes are a favorite among campers.
Roland was born and raised in the Bay Area and has spent the majority of his adult life working with youth, as a baseball coach and as a counselor and Birthday Director at AndrewsCamps. Roland enjoys drawing and playing a variety of sports in his free time. He loves coaching and playing sports with young people because he feels that he can help them have fun while doing physical activities, while also teaching them values, like the importance of teamwork and always striving to give their best effort. His passion is teaching and loves to help children and teens learn new skills and overcome life’s many obstacles. The kids love Roland because behind his stoic demeaner is a goof-ball that no one can resist playing with.
Born in Greenbrae and raised in Inverness, Conner is no stranger to the uniqueness of Marin and the people who live here. He discovered his love of teaching as the vice chairman of his high school mentoring program, stood out as a leader in mock trial and lettered in both soccer and lacrosse. Conner took these service and leadership skills to the next level in the US Navy, serving as a Corpsman for five years where he became an expertly trained and highly specialized life saver. All of this experience makes Conner a valuable member of the AndrewsCamps team where he continues to care for others and inspire them to be their best.
Max grew up in Germany and moved to the Bay Area in 2007. He enjoys running activities with the kids and helping them make their creative game ideas a reality. Max cares about making each camper feel heard, with an opportunity to shine, while bringing his own energy and love of fun to everything he does at AndrewsCamps. At the end of each day, his goal is for every camper to have made a new awesome memory they can take home and keep forever. Campers love watching him ride into work on his motorcycle.
Izabela grew up in Brazil and moved to the United States in 2015. She is currently a student at College of Marin majoring in Psychology. She helps her parents take care of her younger sister and babysits, which made her realize how much she loves to be around kids, and has found a home at AndrewsCamps. Izabela was a swimmer back in Brazil and she loves playing all kinds of sports. She always makes sure all the kids are in a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment.
